One of a Kind Fashion!!

Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013

This past weekend, I had the fabulous experience of attending the Randolph Street Market in Chicago, IL.  It was amazing! I saw some fabulous one of a kind pieces and got to meet amazing people. Here’s my roundup of the top places to visit.

  •  Gypsy Temple has authentic Indian and Nepali clothing, jewelry, shoes, and materials. Everything’s completely original, and the prices are great. I’d recommend this to anyone with a bohemian style and an appreciation for culturally inspired finds.
  •  Weber Antiques, based in Grayslake, IL, is a great place for antique vintage jewelry. It has a treasure trove of well-priced yet exquisitely beautiful jewelry and distinctive gemstones. The owner enjoys sharing stories of some of his vintage pieces. This jewelry stand is one of my favorites.
  •  Danielle Russo has a selection of jewelry with a rocker-inspired aesthetic. Check out her stand for statement conversation pieces that are sure to get noticed. (Check out her Etsy shop too!)
  •  GreenFoxStyle/Vertmoderne is amazing! Whatever you’re looking for, whether that be amazing vintage purses or recycled jewelry, they have. I love the interesting materials they use! (Like tiny rubber bands in jewelry)! Check out the Etsy shops!

All in all, Randolph Street market is a phenomenal destination for anyone who loves one of a kind fashion. Missed it this month? No worries! There are several more markets this year. 2013 dates are as follows.

May 25-26

BREAKING NEWS!!

Friday, June 28th, 2013

So, everyone, do you remember my friend, the unique and fabulous Timothy Westbrook? Well, now he’s on Project Runway Season 12!!! After his amazing Artist In Residence position at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, WI, he applied, auditioned and won one of the coveted 16 slots on Project Runway. If you’ve read my other posts, you’ll know Timothy can make anything out of anything, even “garbage”, which is exactly what Project Runway is all about.( I think he’ll really rock at the unconventional challenge, which my research shows may have taken place at Coney Island! Considering his skills at repurposing, I can’t wait to see what he’s done.) I imagine Tim Gunn was a huge fan of his repurposed and recycled aesthetic, which is great because during the season Tim Gunn will have an opportunity to save one designer from elimination. How cool is that? Remember, fashionistas, the premiere is July 18th at 9/8c.

For more on Timothy check these out.

Don’t Ditch Them Yet! Styles That Will Stick Around

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

Many people think that you need a whole new wardrobe for spring. But some styles, like leather skirts, should stay. Black or bright, leather skirts will follow us into spring. So will trench coats. Neon will also burn brighter than ever, and sheer will get cooler and sexier.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

Hey, fashionistas! I just got the coolest news. I have been invited to Timothy Westbrook’s final gallery night! (For more about Timothy and the Artist in Residence program, check out the Pfister site.) He has invited me as official press and I’m so excited!  This means that I will have access to every photo taken there and get kind of like a backstage pass to the whole thing. I will also be having high tea at the cafe, AND spending the night at this fabulous four- star hotel. Stay tuned!

Project Runway Season 10 Pre-finale

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

In 4 days the Season 10 finale premiers! This season has been a roller coaster of  drama, (Hello, Elena and Dmitry!) emotions, and fabulous fashion. Here’s what I think of each designer and their strengths and weaknesses, plus my views on some of the crazier challenges and eliminations.

  • Melissa will have a really hard time in the finale making a collection. Even though she has shown more range in the last couple challenges, I still don’t think she feels totally comfortable doing color. But if she can use colors and prints and still work with her aesthetic, then she might be able to make it happen.
  • I think the final two will be Christopher and Dmitry. The idea behind Christopher’s dress in the Rockettes challenge was genius, but the skirt had no movement and the fabric behind the skyline should have been navy blue or black. There’s no way you could have known that was the NYC skyline from afar! But the judges loved it, and it won. I really loved his outfit for the baby challenge, though, and the judges agreed.
  • I love Dmitry! Now that he’s stopped making those dresses, I think he’ll be the winner. Dmitry’s Rockettes dress was amazing and completely original. I still think it should have won. I originally thought it would come down to him and Ven, but Ven got eliminated right before Fashion Week.
  • My favorite challenge was the the L’Oreal Paris makeup challenge.  I loved seeing  the different designers work in their own design philosophies with the muses they were given.
  • I really think it’s ironic that during the avant-garde challenge, they make these ready-to-wear dresses, and when they are doing an actual  challenge they make looks nobody would ever wear.
  • Ven has been (and to be honest still is), my favorite designer of the season but I totally lost every ounce of respect I had for him as a person in the make-over-my-friend challenge. He said his client had “no shape” and totally trashed her. And the worst part is, when the friend stood up for the poor girl, Ven justified every word of it! That might have been elaborated a little by the Project Runway producers, but still!
  • I can’t believe Andrea and Kooan  just walked away from this amazing  opportunity that they had! They could have had their big break on this show, and now they’re infamous for leaving something a million designers would have killed for.
  • Oh. My Gosh. Elena had such a stereotypical fashion personality! It’s like she hated everything. And she always had the worst things to say. If you don’t like something, the polite thing to say is, “I’m not crazy about it” or”I don’t love it”. Not the trash that she always said!  But then her mom came on to see her, and it was like a light switch. She wasn’t mean to anyone throughout the whole show. Maybe she was just homesick or stressed. I can’t blame her!

Needless to say, Project Runway Season 10 was one of the craziest yet!

First LaTeaDa Fashion Show was a Success!

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

The first annual LaTeaDa fashion show was a huge success. Designers Timothy Westbrook, artist in residence at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, and Barbara Bates from NBC’s Fashion Star showed clothing and accessories on real women models. Barbara showed retro, 50’s inspired dresses, and a GORGEOUS leather jacket with jeweled buttons. Another huge accomplishment on Bates’s part was her gold blousy top with bell bottoms.

The Leather Jacket

Pfister Hotel Artist In Residence Timothy Westbrook showed an exceptional showcase of embellished dresses that were all either handmade or sewn on a 1920s treadle sewing machine. The mini-collection included a “Queen of the Night” dress that was black and purple and looked exactly what I would have envisioned the Queen of the Night to wear. Westbrook also showed a black and green dress with a  black chiffon bodice and a green skirt. The skirt was made out of fabric with audio cassette tape woven into it. Timothy also sold scarves made out of the same material. At a street festival, people tie-dyed dresses made out of old Pfister bed sheets with Super Soakers filled with either turquoise or coral dye. Timothy showed the dresses at the show.

All in all, the first annual LaTeaDa fashion show was an amazing achievement. With LaTeaDa 2013 being planned, hopefully it will measure up to the first!
